What is a woman?
August 16th 2022 – What is a woman? A simple question. Similar questions are: “what is a dog?”, “what is a lemon?”, “what is water”? Everyone knows. There is no need to define it, because everyone knows what it is. Curiously, “what is a woman?” is a controversial question. Politicians get upset, journalists dodge the question, universities dodge the answer.
American journalist Matt Walsh does ask the question. In his documentary “What is a woman?” (Red. see here voor trailer) Walsh asks the question very ‘dry-ly’ to passers-by on the street, to doctors, family therapists, gender scientists, to a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a nude runner in San Francisco. One starts to stutter, another turns red, yet another gets angry. No one just says it’s obvious. One woman answers: “Some women have a penis, some women have a vagina”. And so the nonsense went on and on. Until Walsh ended his quest for the answer to his simple question in Africa, at the Massai region. Asking the Africans if “a man can become a woman” was met with a hearty laugh. That seems to me the only normal reaction. They still understand that there is such a thing as objective truth, the truth that we do not invent but discover. The reaction was simple and sober: “What is a woman? What a stupid question! Everyone knows that!”
Law of nature, the biological answer
The answer that biological science has always given, is no longer allowed to be given as an answer. Many people – including political parties and universities – have said goodbye to common sense and have included the deconstruction of ‘man’ and ‘woman’ in their political manifesto, or rather in their creed. Because it is ideology. The weakest are usually the first victims. In this case, girls at puberty. They mutilate themselves beyond repair and are encouraged to do so by their environment.
What’s the matter with this chronic impotence to answer dead simple questions? Some people are simply confused by what they see around them. But a larger group of people pretend not to know the answer to the question for politically correct reasons. They do not want to lose their jobs. How has it come to pass that we are afraid to answer such a simple question? Until a few years ago, everyone knew the answer.
Fair competition?
In America, a biological male, aged 29, entered a skateboarding competition as a woman. He won. The other participants were girls of an average age of 12. This transperson was not ashamed of anything. He even claimed that he had no physical advantage, while the opposite was really quite obvious. And commentators did not dare to name the emperor’s clothes. The transperson (I’m obviously not allowed to call him a man, but he is certainly not a woman) did not receive much applause. For the audience, it was clear. A 29-year-old guy competing in a contest where the other contestants are 12-year-old girls, that’s simply not fair.
Matt Walsh asked a transman the following question: “If I tell you that I am a black African, will you accept that? Any normal person who is asked this question by a white American will wonder if this man is crazy, but this trans man was very circumspect. Although it is a stupid question, answering ‘no’ is apparently not an option. The next logical question would then have been: why do I have to accept you as a man? The Emperor’s Clothes is really an extremely timely fairy tale.
Predators and child abuse
At a hearing, Walsh spoke in no uncertain terms: “You are all child abusers. You prey on suggestible children and indoctrinate them in your insane ideological cult, a cult with many fanatical views, but none as disturbed as the idea that boys are girls and girls are boys. By forcing this despicable nonsense on students, even forcing young girls to share locker rooms with boys, you are depriving these children of safety, privacy, and also something more fundamental, the truth. If education is not based on truth, it is worthless, even worse, it is poison. You are poison. You are predators. You know that your ideas are indefensible, you silence the other side because you have no arguments. You can only hide under your beds like pathetic little cowards, hoping we will shut up and go away. But we will not. I promise you that”.
Three cheers! Why do we lie to children? Why do we ignore biological and scientific facts? Yes, why is the truth being violated? Because that is the issue: the truth is denied to children and young people. Why do we allow children to mutilate themselves? Because that is what it is. Why do we ignore suicide rates? The tragedy of transgender people is immense. But that is not allowed to be said, because it does not fit into the ideological lane. It is the relativism and subjectivism underlying this that says that there is no objective truth, no standard by which you can measure good and evil, that nature – and therefore also human beings – are not subject to a natural law, but can be tinkered with according to one’s own design. But nature is ruthless: go against nature and the consequences are disastrous. Always. Tell a boy that he can also be a girl and the least he can do is get seriously confused.
Don’t be afraid
Why do we not do something about it? Are these children not close to our hearts? This is a task for the Church for two reasons. Firstly, the Catholic Church still has a sense of the natural law, of objective truths, and if you live by them you discover the meaning of your existence. It is the decline of the Christian values on which Europe is built that is at the root of the terror of gender ideology. C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton have been excellent at demonstrating this transcendent truth with clear arguments.
Secondly, the Church has some catching up to do when it comes to child abuse. It should be a priority to protect children and young people by getting more involved in the debate and speaking out clearly. But we are not doing it. The noises from Rome are about climate change and these kinds of issues where you can’t go wrong. How cowardly! The collapse of Christian values is a far greater danger than climate change. But no, we are in a fine synodal listening mode. It is time for the Church to speak out
